Claude Tag Launches in Slack: Anthropic's AI Becomes Proactive Ambient Team Member

On June 23, 2026, Anthropic launched Claude Tag — a new product for Slack Enterprise and Team accounts that transforms Claude from a query-response assistant into a persistent, proactive AI team member.

Key capabilities:

• Ambient mode operation: monitors channel activity and proactively provides updates, flags missed follow-ups, and surfaces relevant organizational context without being directly mentioned

• Shared company context that accumulates across interactions: all team members contribute to and draw from the same Claude identity, enabling work handoffs with full continuity

• Tool access integration: can be granted access to Jira, Confluence, GitHub, Salesforce, and Google Drive to take action across the organization's stack

• Admin-controlled permission scoping determines what tools each channel's Claude instance can access

Within Anthropic's own engineering organization, Claude Tag is already approving and incorporating 65% of code changes submitted by the product team — quantifying what AI team membership looks like in terms of autonomous contribution to production codebases.

Important migration deadline: Anthropic is retiring the existing Claude-in-Slack integration on August 3, 2026, giving enterprise administrators a 30-day window from launch to opt in and migrate their workspaces.

Claude Tag is available in beta for Claude Enterprise and Claude Team users, with broader rollout planned.

Why It Matters: This represents the most significant shift in enterprise AI product design since the copilot metaphor was introduced in 2023. An AI team member with proactive behavior, organizational memory, and tool access authorization requires fundamentally different governance frameworks than query-response assistants.
