Meta and Partners Back Personal Agent Protocol for AI Identity Verification

Meta, Sierra, Walmart, Stripe, and Genesys announced the "Personal Agent Protocol" on October 7 — an open standard for AI agent identity and permissioning.

How it works:

• Built on OAuth authentication framework

• Allows AI agents to identify themselves to services rather than posing as human users

• Enables agents to request specific permissions for tasks

• Distinguishes read-only from write access

The protocol aims to solve a growing problem: businesses have struggled to tell legitimate AI agents apart from scrapers or impersonators, leading some companies to block AI agents entirely.

The announcement landed the same week Arena launched its Alignment Index and Anthropic updated its usage policy — all targeting different angles of the same underlying challenge: the basic trust infrastructure between humans, businesses, and autonomous agents doesn't exist yet and has to be built from scratch.

Why It Matters: Multiple parallel efforts to define agent identity, conduct, and honesty standards suggest the industry has concluded this foundational trust infrastructure must be built quickly by multiple parties.
